My Journey in Pencak Silat: Reflections on Effectiveness and Personal Growth

Hi everyone, I’m Roger
I’d like to share some reflections after a recent Pencak Silat class that left me with important insights, especially around topics like street defense, comparisons with Krav Maga, and the real-world effectiveness of what we practice: Bukti Negara.
Table of Content
Street Defense: Instinct vs. Technique
During training, I sometimes wondered if, in a real-life attack, more immediate “street fight” techniques — punches, groin kicks, blocks — would be more useful than the refined movements we practice.
However, in our last session, when we worked on knife defense, it became clear to me how much the precision and method of Pencak Silat matter.
Even with a training knife already drawn, I couldn’t manage to land a strike on my instructor.

Krav Maga vs. Pencak Silat: Differences and Effectiveness
I’ve often wondered how our techniques stack up against more widely known systems like Krav Maga.
The answer was right there on the mat: Pencak Silat, through patient and rigorous training, builds reflexes, fluidity, and adaptability — and these qualities emerge precisely when they are needed most.
Effectiveness: A Growing Confidence
One important lesson is about true effectiveness: it’s not just about strength or flashy techniques.
It’s the combination of mental composure, stress management, and natural movements deeply rooted in the body through practice.
Over time, this confidence is growing inside me, slowly but steadily.

Beyond Self-Defense: Inner Growth
Training in Pencak Silat has shown me that the greatest benefit is mental development.
Physical strength and self-defense skills are important, but what I truly carry with me every day is a calmer, clearer mind — better prepared to face life’s challenges, not just those on the mat.
Conclusion
I’m not sure exactly where this journey will lead, but I know I’ll keep walking it, with commitment and without pressure.
The goal is not a belt or a title, but to become a better version of myself, day by day.
See you at the next training session!
